California State University Long Beach | Outdoor Learning Space
The COVID-19 pandemic has catalyzed a significant shift towards outdoor learning spaces in education, responding to the need for safer, well-ventilated environments to reduce virus transmission risks. These outdoor settings offer numerous benefits, including enhanced engagement through experiential learning, improved mental health from increased connection with nature, and opportunities for physical activity. Adapting to this model has presented challenges, such as modifying curricula and securing necessary infrastructure, but it has also fostered greater community and parental involvement. Technology integration remains crucial in these spaces to maintain access to educational resources. Initially a necessity, this shift is now recognized for its broader educational benefits and may continue to influence teaching methods post-pandemic.
